Wayfarer's League

Where we play. Where we connect.

Making Merry with Cocktails, Cookies, and Crooning

This year has left something to be desired, and apparently the holiday season is no different. Here in the UK, we were told we’d have the week of Christmas to spend with family. But this was not to be so. The Saturday before the big day, the government said “Oopsie!” and tightened the rules, adding “Tier 4” to the list, putting all of London and the majority of South East England into lockdown. The some of our Wayfarers have been sadly affected.

HOWEVER, we are adventurers and with adventuring comes adversity. And together we will defeat our foes. One step was our Holiday Party! As a community, we gathered across the cyber-waves and shared cookies, drinks, presents, and laughs. And we’d like to extend some of this to you now. Below, I’ve shared two recipes and our own lyrics to the 12 Days of Christmas. Share and enjoy 🙂

COCKTAIL MAKING TIME

Tedward, my partner in life (and/or crime), did a cocktail demonstration. The drink he cooked up was a Potion of Cold Resistance, and it went something a little like this…

3 parts Vodka of your choice

1 part Simple Syrup infused with cinnamon, star anise and cloves (recipe below)

1 part Blue Curacao (triple sec will do in a pinch, but it won’t be blue)

Juice of 1/2 lime

-> Put all ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shakey-shake-shake. When the outside of the shaker is frosted, pour into a glass that also has ice in it.

-> Add soda water to taste and and add some luster for that potion-like shimmer. You can get luster in the baking section of your local grocery store.

Making simple syrup is pretty easy:

1 part sugar to 1 part water

-> Bring water to a boil then add the sugar and whisk until the sugar is dissolved.

-> Add the spices and boil for 60 seconds, then remove from heat and let it sit for 30 minutes.

-> Fish out the larger pieces and then strain the syrup into a bottle. You’re good to go!

Resistence to cold, indeed! It was delicious. Let us know if you make one yourself and tell us what you think!

COOKIES?! COOKIES!!

From Grandmother Tatu’s own kitchen, we bring you her special recipe. Katie was kind enough to transcribe it from the goddess of home and hearth herself, making it readily available to all of you.

Grandmother Tatu’s Hearthtide Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

2 cups (256g) Flour

½ tsp. Baking Powder

¼ tsp. Salt

¼ tsp. Cinnamon

½ (113g) cup Butter

1 Egg, beaten

¼ cup Milk

½ tsp. Vanilla

¾ (150g) cup Sugar

½ tsp. Bicarbonate of Soda (Baking Soda)

Method:

-> Preheat Oven to 375ºF (190ºC)

-> Mix together the flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Cut in the butter with a fork,

a pastry blender or just use your fingers.

-> In another bowl, mix together the eggs, milk, vanilla, sugar and bicarbonate of soda.

-> Pour the liquid mixture into the dry mixture and stir gently.

-> Flip the dough onto a lightly floured surface and with floured hands, knead it gently ~

just so it sticks together.

-> Divide into 2 portions and roll each portion out to about 1/2 inch thick.

-> Using cookie cutters, cut out whatever shapes you’d like, (get creative).

-> Place on baking sheets about 2 inches apart.

-> Bake for 5-7 minutes. The secret to soft and chewy old fashioned sugar cookies is to

take them out before they start to brown. If they are lightly browned, they will turn

crunchy!

-> Cool completely on wire racks before icing.

-> Once completely cool, decorate with buttercream icing, feel free to add colouring.

SONG TTTTIIIIMMMME

The leaders of the Wayfarer’s League had a grand time brainstorming a parody version of the 12 days of Christmas. We will record our own version at some point. HOWEVER, we thought it would be fun to share it with all of you. Please, if you do record yourself performing this, please share it with us! And if you post it anywhere, please tag (and credit) Wayfarer’s League! We’d really love to see it!

On the 12th day of Christmas my GM threw at me:

12 Oozes oozing

11 Goblins Raiding

10 Krakens Thrashing

9-th level casting

8 Screeching Harpies

7 Mimics miming

6 Singing shortswords

5 Fireballs!

4 Floating Flumphs

3 Ogres

2 Dopey Guards

and it ended with a T-P-K.

You can try singing our song instead of screaming into the void… at least for a bit.

And there you have it my friends. We sincerely hope you take these gifts and that they brighten your day, week, month, and year. Make some cookies, tell us about your own cocktail creations, and, better yet, come join us on our Discord server. Our door is wide open and we’d love to hang out, spread some cheer, and support one another through these lonely days.
